Blur faces in a photo, free and private

Faces are found automatically and blurred right in your browser. Your photo never leaves your device.

How to blur a face in a photo online

  1. Choose a photo or drag it into the box above. On a phone, you can pick it straight from your camera roll.
  2. Wait a second while faces are detected. Each one is blurred and outlined.
  3. Adjust: tap a face to un-blur it, drag over anything else to blur it, and choose blur or pixelate.
  4. Download (or Share, on a phone). The new image has the effect baked in and no location data.

Private by design

Most online editors upload your photo to a server to process it. This one doesn’t. The detector is a small model (Google’s open-source MediaPipe face detector) that runs on your device using WebAssembly. Once the page has loaded, it would keep working even if you switched off your internet connection.

We still recommend checking the result before sharing. Automatic detection is good, but not perfect.

Frequently asked questions

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. The face detection model is downloaded to your browser, and your photo is processed there on your own device. You can check: open your browser’s developer tools, go to the Network tab, and you’ll see no request carrying your image.

Does the downloaded photo still contain location data?

No. The result is drawn on a canvas and exported as a new image, which doesn’t carry over the original’s EXIF metadata. GPS coordinates, camera model and date are all removed.

Why didn’t it find every face?

Very small, blurry, sideways or partly covered faces are harder to detect. Drag a box over any face it missed and it will be blurred too. Always check the result before sharing.

Blur or pixelate: which is safer?

Both are safe at the default strength, which is deliberately strong. Pixelation with only a few large blocks can’t be reversed. Fine pixelation and light blurs are the risky ones, which is why the tool doesn’t go that low.

Can I blur a video or many photos at once?

Not in the browser tool. It handles one photo at a time. The BlurTap iPhone app blurs faces in videos and in batches of photos, and also finds license plates, text and addresses.

Can I use it on my phone?

Yes. It works in Safari and Chrome on iPhone and Android. On iPhone, the Share button sends the result straight to Photos or any app.
